Brave Enough to Bare: Why we aren’t bearing each other’s burdens

by Katie

I had a front row seat.  I should have seen it coming.  But I didn’t, really.  I thought it was normal marriage stuff.  Frustrations, annoyances, that sort of thing.  And then, just like that, my friend’s marriage was over.  The whole thing crumbled right in front of me.

Some details came out later and some things I’ll never know, but I couldn’t help but wonder, could I have done more?  Could I have prayed more, said more, encouraged more if I had really known what was going on?

We are called to bear one another's burdens, but we cannot bear the burdens we do not see. Community always requires the courage to be vulnerable, the courage to bare so others can come alongside and link arms with us.

The other day I got an e-mail from a sweet reader.  A reader who has once before reached out over hundred of miles and yet the tiniest space of the internet, to say hello. But this time she felt compelled to ask for prayer.  Her request didn’t surprise me as much as the words she framed it with.  “I know we don’t know each other so I apologize if this is overstepping.”

Overstepping.  A simple prayer request.  I’m struggling.  Would you mind praying?

How could this ever be overstepping, friends?  And yet and I share it because I know she is not alone in feeling that way.

We don’t want to share our hurts and our struggles, our aches and our loneliness; we don’t want to weigh anyone down with our mess.  So we don’t.  We crumble under the weight.  We let it crush us, crush our marriages, crush our faith, while those around, even those in the front row, hardly even know what is happening.

It’s not meant to work this way, friends.

Galations 6:2 calls us to bear one another’s burdens, to stand by our sisters with shaking arms and help lift the weight of the load.  But we can never do that for each other, if we don’t know the burdens even exist.  Just as we can’t grow the gifts we do not see, we can’t bear the burdens we aren’t aware of.

We aren’t meant to do this life alone friends.  We are meant to bear.  But for someone to step alongside and bear the burden,  for someone to link arms and join you in the battle, you must go first.  You must be brave enough to share the burden, to bare the hurt, before a friend, a sister, can walk in and bear it with you.  Do you see that?

I know your fear here.  No one wants to be the girl who vomits her baggage over the rest of the well dressed and respectable world – the girl who over-shares, the weak one, the needy one, the mess.  I get it.  But a couple of things happen when we are not vulnerable enough, brave enough, to share.

We are crushed by the load.

Ecclesiastes 4:9-10 says “Two are better than one, because they have a good return for their labor: If either of them falls down, one can help the other up.  But pity anyone who falls and has no one to help them up.”  Don’t fall alone, friends.  It’s pitiful.

We rob our friends of the blessing.

I often respond to e-mail prayer requests by saying it’s an honor to pray for you.  Because it truly is.  This is my job as a sister in Christ.  And it’s your job and your friends’ jobs as well.  Don’t rob them of what they are called to do.  Bare bravely and give them the opportunity to bear with you.

Standing together is always braver than standing alone.

We tell the world that silence is brave.

Our walls show our friends how to live, they show our daughters how to live, they show the world how to live.  When we grit our teeth, clench our fists and refuse to bare our hurts, we are showing our world that this is how it’s done.  And we’re setting a terrible example.

We must be brave enough to bare so those around us can bear with us, friends.  You don’t have to vomit, but you do have to let others in.  We have to be brave enough to share a simple prayer request, even over the internet.  Standing together is always braver than standing alone.

When you share with a couple of people from church, but then it’s never mentioned again…

Then there’s a couple of strangers online you’re given the opportunity to share with and they act like close friends…thankful for them, but it hurts a little.

I hear you, Jennifer. We always run the risk of people not “bearing” well. But might I urge you; be brave enough to keep trying. Finding community isn’t always easy. Sometime we have to kiss some toads, but when we find our people, the authentic souls who live out the gospel and bear well, it’s always worth it.

Wow! This message could not have come at a better time! I have been struggling with knowing if God is answering me. I too have had my marriage crumble. It has affected everyone in my family. My husband and I separated awhile ago. He is clinically depressed and moved out. He has since moved back in. I found out that he had an affair while separated. He has hurt me deeply. After years of therapy, I’ve decided to move to another state to live near my sons. My daughter, son in law and granddaughter live with us for almost 2 years now. I recently told my daughter that in about 6 months I will be leaving. I can’t afford to live here. I bought a house and am very ambivalent about moving. I know that I need to move forward with my life. Nothing will change if I stay here. There is no trust in my marriage. I have prayed for guidance from God to help me to know if this is the right thing to do. I need to figure out my life. My daughter feels I’m deserting her. I need prayers.

I’m so sorry, Joan, your struggle is real. Thankfully, so is our God. I am committed to praying for you, but, if you haven’t already, I encourage you to seek wise and trusted counsel locally – your minister or a grounded mentor can be a priceless gift in standing beside you as you walk through this. Praying for peace and discernment as you continue to step bravely. <3

        Katie,
Thank you so much for your encouraging words and for praying for me. Joan

I literally had this conversation last night with a friend…until 1 am. Our culture has created this sense of only exposing the highlight reel of our lives. And that is NOT biblical. May we lower our walls, let a few sisters in, and allow us to bare one another’s burdens and struggles and fears and doubts. Such a great message every believing sister needs to hear. Thank you for writing this!

Wow, bearing at 1 am, Krystal; hat is impressive! I think I stop bearing well at about 10 pm. 😉 I love how you live this out, friend.

I scanned a post shared by a friend awhile back an I scanned a post shared by a friend awhile back and the words quickly wooed me. I’ve long been a sucker for words.
.
The writer spun them expertly, thoughtfully, vividly, and I was glad to drink of her craft, greedy for story drawn artfully, delivered thoughtfully, from a deep well.

Until I realized, the words weren’t true. The author was believing a well woven lie and carefully threading mistruth into her own kind of gospel. Her mastery, a thin veil for mistruth.
.
I was reminded, friend, perhaps the apple looks a bit different today. The shape and size, delivery method, have gone modern but the Truth is still the same - sin is crouching, desiring us and we are commanded to rule over it. Still, today.
.
We must know Truth to spot lies. We must remember it, to recognize the difference. We must be aware of our weaknesses and the sticky compulsion of temptation. It’s our responsibility to rule here. May we do so, bravely..

This morning, remember. This morning, remember.
Just a little PSA to remind you - it’s possible. Just a little PSA to remind you - it’s possible.

It’s possible to be aware of the news and the world, of foreign relations and politics, and not be obsessed about it.

It’s possible to feel the real hurt of real trouble and not be possessed by it.

It’s possible to be in the world and not of it. To remember who God was, and is, and always will be, above it.

It’s possible to remember Him here.

May we learn to do so, bravely.

The humanity of Jesus Christ is an indispensable g The humanity of Jesus Christ is an indispensable gift to us as believers. Every challenge we face He met and mastered. The Bible doesn’t speak of endless notifications and group texts, but it does speak of people with real needs showing up in Christ’s path constantly.
.
Wherever He went crowds followed with needs and questions and frustrations and problems. He got in a boat to cross to the other side of the sea, and people would race to meet Him there.

Can you even imagine?

And His most common response? He was moved with compassion.
.
Over and over again, He stopped what He was doing, paused from the task at hand, and tended to the needy hearts - the bleeding woman, the woman at the well - right in front of Him.
.
Far too often I find I’m happy to entertain distractions - anything that prevents me from giving my full attention to something else - and yet annoyed by interruptions. Perhaps it is because one I choose, while the other I do not?
.
Discerning the difference between a distraction and an interruption has been a helpful tool to me. I want to love like Christ. I want to be interruptible, but I want to give my full attention to what He places in my path.
.
What about you? Are you more frustrated by distractions or interruptions?

I need your help with something fun!
.
This little book is making its way out into the world and instead of sending all of the marketing copies to all of the “influencer” people, we’ve held a supply back for the real people on the ground.
.
These copies are for the women’s ministry leaders and the Bible study leaders. The small group leaders and women out there mentoring and serving others in quiet and unseen places. The women without a platform or audience in the world’s currency, but willing to do good and important work for the women right in front of them.
.
I’m convinced this work of leading and serving face to face is more important than ever and I want to say thank you! And keep going! Your work matters.
.
So here is how it works: If you are a local leader or know of one who you would like me to send a copy of my hot-off-the-press book, But Then She Remembered: How to Give God Your Full Attention in a Distracted World, DM me with a name and mailing address. I’ll send them a copy of the book with a personal thank you note for the good work they are doing.

Crash my inbox. We’ll send ‘em out while supplies last!
