Fear Fighting: Do you Live Fear or Faith?

by Katie

Do you live fear or faith?  It is a question worth taking a hard look at.  Today I’m thrilled to introduce you to a beautiful writer who speaks my language, our language.  Kelly Balarie fights hard to awaken courage and choose brave.  She lives it.  She knows what it is like to live in fear and what it is like to walk in faith and from those experiences she vulnerably pours out, inspiring others to fight fear as well.  Today her new book Fear Fighting: Awakening courage to overcome your fears enters the world and she has been generous enough to share with us some encouragement gleaned straight from the heart of that book.  I hope you enjoy her passion as much as I do! (Some of the links in this post may be affiliate links.  As always, you can view our full disclosure policy here.)

Just yesterday, my friend told me her daughter has lice.

I hugged that girl yesterday!

Would lice go from her hair to mine? Would I be cleaning the entire house, washing every sheet and stuffed animal, and pulling a thin comb through every inch of hair on my family’s heads from now until eternity? I can’t handle this thought. Next time, fist bumps will trump hugs.

Do you live from fear or from faith? We all have a choice. The truth about living by faith.

Fear is the plumbing of discontentment.
It is the spillage of hesitation and loneliness.
It is the brakes to love.
It is the bulldozer to close relationships.
Fear is the boundary holding you back from God’s unlimited plan for you.

Fear is the rain cloud that always follows, the homicide to all God has, the breeding ground to insecurities, the shortness of breath that wakes you up at night, the cemetery of faith, and the artery blockage to the Spirit’s leading.

Fear is a wildfire that makes you run so far that you find galaxies of space between you and your great maker. It is the blocked artery to faith. It is the burden that keeps persisting. It is the laryngitis to the voice proclaiming God.

I hate fear. I’ve written all about it in my new book, Fear Fighting: Awakening the Courage to Overcome Your Fears.

It makes my eyes pulsate. I get angry at it.

But, here’s the thing about getting angry –  the second I do is the second I have a deep gnawing feeling God wants to say something. Somehow, I know, if I don’t listen to it I’ll miss out on – amazing.

Do you live faith or fear? Faith says you can. Fear says you won't. Faith wins every time. Fear fighting book.

So, I search and uncover God’s heart. What I come to is this: “Faith, dear child, faith.”

Faith says, you can. Fear says, you won’t.
Faith ignites passion. Fear depletes it.
Faith brings hope. Fear fire hoses it.
Faith changes lives. Fear wrecks them.
Faith makes Jesus shine. Fear desecrates his name.
Faith charges lives. Fear zaps them.
Faith walks in hope of eternity. Fear cowers down to death.
Faith doesn’t have to be huge. Fears always are.
Faith exalts Jesus. Fear bows down to the devil.
Faith speaks humility. Fear listens to pride.
Faith accepts grace. Fear hugs shame.
Faith knows it’s not perfect. Fear thinks God leaves the imperfect.
Faith wins every time.

Faith takes I-am-going-over-the-cliff moments and turns them around. Suddenly, you realize you aren’t going over the cliff to die, but to fly.

Where do you need faith? How can you create a second of space, before rapidly responding in fear?

I’ve found if I can just halt my response for a second, I have a second to choose God. He is full of grace. He is rooting for us. There is freedom for those in Christ Jesus.

I’ve read Kelly’s new book, friends, and it reads like grace.  However, Kelly has not always fought fear.  For a large part of her life, she was controlled by it.  In her book she charts a new course. She is on a lifetime journey to go and grow with Christ’s bravery, the Spirit’s counsel and God’s unending love that squelches fear.  Tackling large fears and crushing anxiety as well the small and quieter fears that haunt us deep, the ones we rarely talk about, Kelly leaves no stone unturned.  She offers prayer, hope and inspiration while vulnerably sharing her own very real struggles.  Fear fighting is definitely a part of choosing brave, friends, and Kelly’s passion to fight fear with truth is contagious.  I hope her words were a gift to you today.

Thank you for this post. Thank you Kelly for the powerful image of my fear being the artery blockage…Wow! I have also believed the lie, “God leaves the imperfect”. I strive and strive out of fear.

Isn’t that a beautiful imagery, Jenee? Kelly is a master of words and seems to get right to the point of what we all struggling with, even the fears we haven’t voiced yet. You are aren’t alone in the battle. <3

I scanned a post shared by a friend awhile back an I scanned a post shared by a friend awhile back and the words quickly wooed me. I’ve long been a sucker for words.
.
The writer spun them expertly, thoughtfully, vividly, and I was glad to drink of her craft, greedy for story drawn artfully, delivered thoughtfully, from a deep well.

Until I realized, the words weren’t true. The author was believing a well woven lie and carefully threading mistruth into her own kind of gospel. Her mastery, a thin veil for mistruth.
.
I was reminded, friend, perhaps the apple looks a bit different today. The shape and size, delivery method, have gone modern but the Truth is still the same - sin is crouching, desiring us and we are commanded to rule over it. Still, today.
.
We must know Truth to spot lies. We must remember it, to recognize the difference. We must be aware of our weaknesses and the sticky compulsion of temptation. It’s our responsibility to rule here. May we do so, bravely..

This morning, remember. This morning, remember.
Just a little PSA to remind you - it’s possible. Just a little PSA to remind you - it’s possible.

It’s possible to be aware of the news and the world, of foreign relations and politics, and not be obsessed about it.

It’s possible to feel the real hurt of real trouble and not be possessed by it.

It’s possible to be in the world and not of it. To remember who God was, and is, and always will be, above it.

It’s possible to remember Him here.

May we learn to do so, bravely.

The humanity of Jesus Christ is an indispensable g The humanity of Jesus Christ is an indispensable gift to us as believers. Every challenge we face He met and mastered. The Bible doesn’t speak of endless notifications and group texts, but it does speak of people with real needs showing up in Christ’s path constantly.
.
Wherever He went crowds followed with needs and questions and frustrations and problems. He got in a boat to cross to the other side of the sea, and people would race to meet Him there.

Can you even imagine?

And His most common response? He was moved with compassion.
.
Over and over again, He stopped what He was doing, paused from the task at hand, and tended to the needy hearts - the bleeding woman, the woman at the well - right in front of Him.
.
Far too often I find I’m happy to entertain distractions - anything that prevents me from giving my full attention to something else - and yet annoyed by interruptions. Perhaps it is because one I choose, while the other I do not?
.
Discerning the difference between a distraction and an interruption has been a helpful tool to me. I want to love like Christ. I want to be interruptible, but I want to give my full attention to what He places in my path.
.
What about you? Are you more frustrated by distractions or interruptions?
.

I need your help with something fun!
.
This little book is making its way out into the world and instead of sending all of the marketing copies to all of the “influencer” people, we’ve held a supply back for the real people on the ground.
.
These copies are for the women’s ministry leaders and the Bible study leaders. The small group leaders and women out there mentoring and serving others in quiet and unseen places. The women without a platform or audience in the world’s currency, but willing to do good and important work for the women right in front of them.
.
I’m convinced this work of leading and serving face to face is more important than ever and I want to say thank you! And keep going! Your work matters.
.
So here is how it works: If you are a local leader or know of one who you would like me to send a copy of my hot-off-the-press book, But Then She Remembered: How to Give God Your Full Attention in a Distracted World, DM me with a name and mailing address. I’ll send them a copy of the book with a personal thank you note for the good work they are doing.
.
Crash my inbox. We’ll send ‘em out while supplies last!
