The One Thing You Really Must Know This Christmas

by Katie

December 1st came and went and guess what?  I’m not done Christmas shopping.  I planned to be.  But I’m not.

My lists aren’t as complete as I had hoped.  There are hard-to-find things left to track down.  I’ve got some tracking to do.

The Christmas shopping is not all done. There is baking left to do and events left to attend. But amidst all of that, there is one thing you really must know...

It’s December 5th and guess what?  We’re behind on advent devotions in this house.  5 days, people; 5 days and we couldn’t even keep up.  There have been late nights with family and late nights spent singing and, yes, we are already behind.

I had a plan as to how this was going to happen.  We were going to read our Bible devotions with breakfast, our fun read aloud at lunch and our advent devotions before bed.  Five days in and we’ve already botched it.

I’ve made Christmas cookies that haven’t been frosted and printed party invitations that haven’t been sent.

It’s only December 5th and Christmas is kind of kicking my butt.

Christmas girls

I had the opportunity to speak at a ladies event this week.  My task?  Speak about traditions.  Talk about bringing Christ into your home at Christmas, bonding your family, that sort of thing.

Clearly they didn’t ask me based on how well I’m doing this year.

What words could I really offer, what hope could I really give when I’m barely managing to pull this Christmas thing off myself?

So I did the only thing I knew to do.  I spoke the message I needed to hear.   Truth be told, I do that around here more often than you realize, preaching the words I’m still, at the same time, still learning to receive.

In the gospel of John, a book without the traditional Christmas story, we hear of Christmas like this:

And the Word became flesh and dwelt among us, and we beheld His glory, the glory as of the only begotten of the Father, full of grace and truth.  John bore witness of Him and cried out saying, “This was He of whom I said, “He who comes after me is preferred before me, for He was before me.””  And of His fullness we have all received, and grace for grace.

This week I was reminded what the Nativity, what the first Christmas, really looked like.  The word became flesh and dwelt among us.  Did you catch that?  Among us.  Among our mess.  Among our advent devotion failures and undecorated Christmas cookies.  Among us.

And because of that “of his fullness” we have all received grace upon grace.  Unbelievable, really.  For all the Christmas lists I make in my head, for all of the Best Christmas EVER goals I want to achieve, the real story is Him meeting me, Him meeting all of us, right in the midst of our messes.  Flooding it all, with grace upon grace.

This is the only tradition I need for this year.  This is the one thing I need to wash over my Christmas list, my Christmas fails, my Christmas hopes and dream. His fullness, His grace, in all of it.

This is the one thing you really must know this Christmas, the one thing we all must remember as we are rushing about and trying our best to enjoy what really is the most wonderful time of the year. Keep your eyes fixed on Him and your heart every mindful of His grace.

What a glorious gift. Because of Him we receive grace upon grace. John 1:16

Thank you, Lisa! I wish I didn’t need the reminder as much as I did, that my reflexes were stronger than they sometimes are, but I’m still working on that. 🙂

I’m behind on my devotional AND my lists…as you said, as long as Jesus is the central focus, it’s all good!!!

You’re absolutely right. I try very hard to compartmentalize all the things I like to get done for the holidays, but if it doesn’t happen, it’s no reason to fret. “The Word became flesh and dwelt among us.” He knows our hearts.

Indeed He does. Thanks so much for stopping by, Traci!

Sigh. I’m behind too. On my John Piper Advent book (which I’m LOVING), and Ishtar’s Odyssey. And I was so determined not to get behind this year!

I’m choosing not to get discouraged, but caught up. Slowly. And yes, to keep my heart fixed on Jesus, and not this timeline I think I must follow to read these books just so.

      December 7, 2015 at 5:19 pm

I’m so glad you’re loving Piper! What a gift that the readings are short and easy to catch up on, right? Fighting for grace each day right along with you!

Beautiful words – I know those ladies were encouraged by your message! I love that God meets us in our mess. No striving or cleaning up in order to meet requirements. Grace washing over us and grace moving us towards holiness through the Holy Spirit.

Exactly, Melody. Thank you for stopping by!

I scanned a post shared by a friend awhile back an I scanned a post shared by a friend awhile back and the words quickly wooed me. I’ve long been a sucker for words.
.
The writer spun them expertly, thoughtfully, vividly, and I was glad to drink of her craft, greedy for story drawn artfully, delivered thoughtfully, from a deep well.

Until I realized, the words weren’t true. The author was believing a well woven lie and carefully threading mistruth into her own kind of gospel. Her mastery, a thin veil for mistruth.
.
I was reminded, friend, perhaps the apple looks a bit different today. The shape and size, delivery method, have gone modern but the Truth is still the same - sin is crouching, desiring us and we are commanded to rule over it. Still, today.
.
We must know Truth to spot lies. We must remember it, to recognize the difference. We must be aware of our weaknesses and the sticky compulsion of temptation. It’s our responsibility to rule here. May we do so, bravely..

This morning, remember. This morning, remember.
Just a little PSA to remind you - it’s possible. Just a little PSA to remind you - it’s possible.

It’s possible to be aware of the news and the world, of foreign relations and politics, and not be obsessed about it.

It’s possible to feel the real hurt of real trouble and not be possessed by it.

It’s possible to be in the world and not of it. To remember who God was, and is, and always will be, above it.

It’s possible to remember Him here.

May we learn to do so, bravely.

The humanity of Jesus Christ is an indispensable g The humanity of Jesus Christ is an indispensable gift to us as believers. Every challenge we face He met and mastered. The Bible doesn’t speak of endless notifications and group texts, but it does speak of people with real needs showing up in Christ’s path constantly.
.
Wherever He went crowds followed with needs and questions and frustrations and problems. He got in a boat to cross to the other side of the sea, and people would race to meet Him there.

Can you even imagine?

And His most common response? He was moved with compassion.
.
Over and over again, He stopped what He was doing, paused from the task at hand, and tended to the needy hearts - the bleeding woman, the woman at the well - right in front of Him.
.
Far too often I find I’m happy to entertain distractions - anything that prevents me from giving my full attention to something else - and yet annoyed by interruptions. Perhaps it is because one I choose, while the other I do not?
.
Discerning the difference between a distraction and an interruption has been a helpful tool to me. I want to love like Christ. I want to be interruptible, but I want to give my full attention to what He places in my path.
.
What about you? Are you more frustrated by distractions or interruptions?

I need your help with something fun!
.
This little book is making its way out into the world and instead of sending all of the marketing copies to all of the “influencer” people, we’ve held a supply back for the real people on the ground.
.
These copies are for the women’s ministry leaders and the Bible study leaders. The small group leaders and women out there mentoring and serving others in quiet and unseen places. The women without a platform or audience in the world’s currency, but willing to do good and important work for the women right in front of them.
.
I’m convinced this work of leading and serving face to face is more important than ever and I want to say thank you! And keep going! Your work matters.
.
So here is how it works: If you are a local leader or know of one who you would like me to send a copy of my hot-off-the-press book, But Then She Remembered: How to Give God Your Full Attention in a Distracted World, DM me with a name and mailing address. I’ll send them a copy of the book with a personal thank you note for the good work they are doing.
.
Crash my inbox. We’ll send ‘em out while supplies last!
